Hat making

Our big book this week has been "Mr's Honey's hat'.
Every day something came off her hat and something new was added.

Room 15 decided it would be fun to make our own hats so the paper folding began.

How can we make sure things don't come off our hats?

"We could use glue".
"We could use cello-tape"
"Could we please use the stapler too"?

"The cello-tape was not strong enough to stick the spider webs on so I used staples. The staples worked really well".

"My hat can carry things".

"My hat has a handle so it will be safe if it falls off",
"Look at my double decker hat. My hat has another hat stuck on it".
"My hat is a Halloween hat and it has zombies and spiders on it".
"My hat is a scary hat because it has hot lava and spiders on it".

"Look at me funny hat. The glue wasn't strong enough to hold some things on so I needed to use the stapler".

Blossom trees

Spring has arrived at Ilam School.

The kowhai trees are flowering and we can spy cherry blossom trees blossoming over at the University.
A bare Winter tree.
First we painted the trunk and thick branches with brown paint.
Then we added water to the paint and mixed it together.
Next we dipped our brush into the watery paint and dripped it onto the thick branches.
After that we blew through a straw to push the watery paint across the paper to form thin branches.

Finally we scrunched up crepe paper to make blossoms and glued them  to the branches.

Some trees have yellow blossoms like a kowhai tree, some have pink blossoms like a cherry tree and some are rainbow blossom trees.

Being positive with new ideas

This week we have been reading, 'The Lilly Pilly Tree', and we felt positive that we could make a nest like Tom and Lee from sticks, wool, cello-tape and boxes.

"The tissues and wool will be a soft lining!"

What wonderful new ideas everyone! Well done for staying so positive!

Te Ra in the cloakroom

After reading 'How Maui slowed the sun', we decided to make a giant sun for our cloakroom to welcome visitors and encourage them to stay a while.

First we used pastels to colour the sun.
Then we glued cellophane on top of the sun.
Finally we used our flax ropes to hold the sun down in the cloakroom.
